Chelsea Removals Health and Safety Policy
Chelsea Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers, and members of the public who may be affected by our work. As a professional removals company, we recognise that our activities involve manual handling, vehicle use, working in and around homes, offices, and commercial premises, and the movement of heavy and bulky items. We take health and safety seriously and integrate it into all aspects of our operations.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The aim of this Health and Safety Policy is to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health, and to promote a positive safety culture throughout Chelsea Removals. Our key objectives are to identify and manage risks associated with removal and relocation services, to comply with applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry guidance, and to provide appropriate training, equipment, and supervision so that work is carried out safely and efficiently.
This policy applies to all employees of Chelsea Removals, including temporary and agency staff, as well as subcontractors working on our behalf. We also expect our customers and visitors to our sites or vehicles to cooperate with reasonable safety instructions issued by our staff.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Chelsea Removals holds overall responsibility for health and safety within the company. This includes providing adequate resources for the implementation, maintenance, and review of this policy and associated procedures, ensuring that health and safety considerations are incorporated into business planning and day-to-day decision making, setting clear health and safety objectives and monitoring performance against them, and reviewing this policy at regular intervals, and whenever there are significant changes to our activities or relevant legislation.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy within their areas of control. They must ensure that risk assessments are completed, safe systems of work are followed, and staff have the information, instruction, and training they need to work safely.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. Employees are expected to follow company safety procedures and instructions at all times, use equipment, tools, and vehicles safely and for their intended purpose, wear any personal protective equipment provided, such as gloves, safety footwear, or high-visibility clothing, and report hazards, near misses, accidents, and unsafe practices to their manager without delay.
Employees must not misuse or interfere with anything provided in the interests of health, safety, or welfare. Cooperation and active participation in safety training and briefings are an essential part of every role within Chelsea Removals.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Chelsea Removals carries out risk assessments for our removal and relocation operations, including packing, loading, transport, unloading, and placement of goods. These assessments identify potential hazards such as manual handling of heavy items, slips, trips and falls at premises and loading areas, vehicle movements in residential streets and commercial sites, working in confined spaces such as narrow stairways and corridors, and handling fragile, high-value, or hazardous items as agreed with the customer.
From these assessments we develop safe systems of work, including planning the move in advance to minimise risks, using appropriate lifting techniques, equipment, and team lifting where necessary, ensuring good housekeeping in vehicles, storage facilities, and loading areas, and coordinating safely with customers, building managers, and other contractors at the property.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key part of removal activities, and Chelsea Removals places particular emphasis on reducing the risk of strain and injury. We train staff in correct lifting and carrying techniques, assess loads before lifting and use trolleys, dollies, and other mechanical aids where suitable, encourage team lifting for heavy or awkward items, and avoid unnecessary carrying by positioning vehicles and equipment as close as safely possible to the property.
All equipment used in our work, including lifting aids, straps, ramps, and protective materials, is selected, maintained, and used in accordance with manufacturer guidance and relevant safety standards. Defective or damaged equipment must be reported and taken out of use immediately.
Vehicles and Driving Safety
Our vehicles play a central role in our services and must be operated safely at all times. Chelsea Removals ensures that vehicles are regularly inspected and maintained to a safe standard, loads are secured to prevent movement and damage during transit, routes are planned to allow sufficient time and to consider local traffic and access constraints, and drivers are competent, suitably licensed, and aware of their responsibilities under road safety law.
Drivers must not operate vehicles when unfit to drive, whether due to fatigue, medication, alcohol, or any other reason. Any collisions, incidents, or near misses involving company vehicles must be reported promptly.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
Our teams work regularly in occupied homes, offices, and commercial premises, and we recognise our responsibility to protect customers, visitors, and the public. We take reasonable steps to maintain clear and safe access routes, especially on stairs, corridors, and building entrances, use warning signs or verbal instructions where temporary hazards cannot be eliminated immediately, secure doors, gates, and loading areas as far as reasonably practicable during operations, and handle customer property with care to prevent damage and reduce the risk of injury from broken or unstable items.
We work cooperatively with property owners and managers to comply with any local site rules, access controls, or additional safety measures that may apply.
Training, Information, and Supervision
Chelsea Removals provides appropriate health and safety training to employees according to their role and experience. This includes induction training for new starters on company safety rules and emergency procedures, task-specific training in manual handling, equipment use, and vehicle operation, and ongoing refresher training and toolbox talks to reinforce safe practices and address any new risks or procedures.
Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that teams are adequately briefed before each job, that work is supervised proportionately to the level of risk and staff experience, and that any concerns raised by employees are addressed promptly.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, instances of work-related ill health, and near misses must be reported to management as soon as possible. Chelsea Removals keeps appropriate records, investigates incidents where necessary, and takes action to prevent recurrence. First aid supplies are provided in vehicles and at relevant locations, and employees are informed of the arrangements for first aid assistance while at work.
Emergency procedures are in place for fire, evacuation, and other foreseeable events, and staff are made aware of these procedures as part of their training and site-specific briefings.
Monitoring, Review, and Continuous Improvement
Chelsea Removals monitors health and safety performance through incident statistics, feedback from staff and customers, audits, and site checks. We use this information to identify trends, correct weaknesses, and improve our procedures. This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed periodically, and when there are significant changes to our operations or relevant legislation, to ensure it remains effective and appropriate for the range of removal and relocation services we provide.
By working together and following this policy, everyone at Chelsea Removals contributes to a safer working environment and a high standard of service for our customers across our service area.
